He doesn't want to pretend to be her beau. He wants the real thing. Maebry O'Riley wishes she wasn't carrying a torch for handsome Gil. He makes her long for a real future as his wife, but he is a dream that can never be hers. She isn't free to love anyone, even a good man like Gil. This is a sweet historical. Approximately 40,000 words.

I really enjoyed this book by a new-to-me author. I thought the plot line believable and I especially enjoyed the friendly banter between the hero and heroine. The one thing I did find odd is that Maebry, being from Ireland, didn't seem to speak with an Irish accent and fiery temper as most Irish people are portrayed in other books.Maebry O'Riley is an indentured servant to a crotchety old woman who is mean and demanding of Maebry's time. Gil Blackburn, the hero, steps in to help when needed and falls for Maebry hard. Maebry, likewise, falls hard for Gil. Will they make a go of it or will Maebry's boss/owner keep them apart?
If you enjoy clean, historical romance, then this is a good book to read. It is the prequel to a series by this author and would be best read first. Enjoy!
I received an ecopy of this book from the author. I voluntarily choose to review this book and would recommend it to anyone of any age.

Then Came You The McPhee Clan Jillian Hart 9781494232306 Books Reviews
It was so need to read about the love between Gil and Maebry. He was a handsome cowboy who worked at the Rocky by M ranch and she worked as a cook and she was an indentured slave to Maureen McPhee. Maureen was a hateful woman who really treated her only child Aumeleigh worse than anyone could imagine, to the degree she cut her out of her will. She left everything to her five nieces and they did the one thing that Maureen would not do. I have read the eight books that follow this book. I am looking forward to the book that was due staggered of this year, titled A Place In The Heart,Oscar's story.
Maebry O'Reilly became an indentured servant to a very old ill lady named, Maureen. Maureen was very nasty and demanding. Maebry and Maureen's daughter took care of Maureen. Maebry had agreed to become indentured to Maureen for two terms so she could bring her sister with her from Ireland. Gil Blackhorn was a ranch hand on the ranch which Maureen owned. He liked Maebry and Maebry liked him. The only problem was that after Maureen died Maebry did not know where she would end up. Her contract was still valid and she believed that the people who inherited the estate would want her to work for them until her contract was finished. Maureen, being a very nasty person, did not leave her Maebry's contract to her daughter. Will Maebry's contact go to a relative who lives far away? Will Maureen's daughter get any inheritance from her mother? Will Gil and Maebry end up together. I recommend this book as it is a well written interesting story.
Then Came You (The McPhee Clan) by Jillian Hart
I read this book first because I thought it was the prequel to the McPhee Clan. It isn’t a prequel just a look back to the beginning of the McPhee’s before the sister’s arrival. I liked the story of Maebry and Gil especially how he said he would wait, no matter how long. It was interesting learning a little bit about being an indentured servant. I know it happened but it saddened me that someone would do that to a family member. The one thing that I didn’t like about the book is that some things are said/thought over and over. It is one thing to tell something a few times, but not repeatedly thought the entire book.
Being an indentured servant is no picnic for the servant, but by being one, freedom can be gained. In Maebry O'Riley's case, the terms of service were doubled. Seeking a life for herself and her sister away from her cruel, lecherous stepfather, she agreed to serve the time for both of them, fourteen years, to Maureen McPhee, owner of the Rocking M Ranch in Bluebell, Montana Territory. A crueler, more strict, ungrateful taskmaster could not have possibly been found. But Maebry had her dreams. Only she would never act on them. The debt to be paid to give her the freedom to have them was too great. So she dreamed.
Love blooms under these most impossible odds. With a future uncertain once Maureen McPhee, the owner of her indentured contract dies, Maebry tries to keep the walls around her heart tall and unscaled. Wanting to discourage unwanted attentions from Lawrence Latimer, Maebry asks Gil Blackburn, the new ranch hand, to pretend to be her beau. Secretly she wishes it was true, but from a simple crush true love really does begin to blossom. Only the remaining years on her contract is a mountain neither of them can move. Gil wants to buy it from Maureen, but she refuses to sell, wanting Maebry as unhappy as she is. Maebry refuses to start a life with Gil under the same tremendous debt that wrecked her parents' lives. Through it all, true love continues to flourish. Could their love prevail? Would Maureen's heirs release her or would they simply move her away from the ranch? Or was her future to be a lonely, heartbroken spinster?
I loved this sweet, romantic story. Well developed characters weaved a gentle love story through a well executed plot. From the first page to the last, I was totally engrossed in every page. As I turned each page, I felt as if I was there in their romance, uncertainly, and sacrifice. I empathized and sympathized with their plight as they struggled to grow their love and resign themselves to a distant future happily ever after. The scenery was vividly written and the dialogue was engrossing.
I would recommend to all romance readers who want a good, clean romantic story faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. This prequel to The McPhee Clan series was very well written.
5/5 stars Could love conquer all their demons?
The problem I have with this story is that Hart has to go over and over the main conflict because it is not really a conflict that the reader can dig his mentality into to try to resolve. Then Hart' s resolution is so predictable that the book simpers sweetly to the end. The author puts the words in Gil' s mouth that she thinks every woman would want her cowboy to say, but I don't think tough guys really think this way. Another weakness to me is that these characters use Christian virtues without any sign of worship evident GIl could have at least taken her to the weekly service!
